7, 14 and 30 days
A prepaid eSIM comes as GB tiers or unlimited days, and trip length picks the field
| Trip length | Deciding field | Published figures |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Price for the week | Top pick cheapest of five in 28 of 41 destinations (unlimited, 30 Oct 2026) |
| 14 days | Refund window against the booking date | Top pick 180 days; Nomad and Saily 30 days; Airalo 14 days |
| 30 days | Price per country and refund window | Top pick cheapest in 12 of 41 (30 Oct 2026); it and Holafly 180 days |
A prepaid travel eSIM is sold in two shapes. A fixed tier gives a set amount of data for a set number of days. An unlimited tier sells days, with no GB figure on the plan.
At 7 days: price decides, and our top pick leads. Its 7-day unlimited plan in Germany, with 2 GB a day at full speed, costs $19.10, against $23.00 at Nomad and $27.50 at Holafly (prices checked 30 Oct 2026).
At 14 days: the refund window decides for a trip booked early. Our pick refunds an unactivated eSIM for 180 days. Airalo refunds within 14 days, and Nomad and Saily within 30 days. Its 14-day Germany plan costs $34.72.
At 30 days: the top pick's Germany plan costs $63.24, or $2.11 a day, against $2.73 a day at 7 days. Rivals cut harder for 30 days. In Germany, Airalo's 30-day plan cost $59.00 on 30 Oct 2026, and a rival was cheaper at 30 days in 29 of 41 destinations.
Whatever the trip length, HelloRoam bills in any of 31 currencies, with Apple Pay and Google Pay on its site and in its app.
Prices are from the 30 Oct 2026 price check: rivals read on their own sites that day, our top pick from its catalogue spot-checked the same day.
Data expiry
Understanding prepaid eSIM data validity
Every prepaid travel eSIM plan has two limits: a data cap and a validity period. Data left at the end of the period expires. Data used up early ends the plan early, and a top-up restarts it.
Each plan page states when its validity starts. On a plan that counts from first data use, you can buy weeks before the trip, install it at home, and the clock starts at your destination.
To avoid waste, buy the plan that matches the trip length. Running out carries no penalty; you buy more in the same app.
Holafly unlimited plans state no daily data cap, only a day limit, with a 1 GB per day hotspot cap. Our pick's unlimited plans run at full speed for 2 GB a day in most destinations, then slow down.

FAQ
Prepaid eSIM questions
Q1Are travel eSIMs prepaid or postpaid?
HelloRoam, Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Nomad all sell prepaid travel eSIMs. You pay upfront before the plan activates. There are no monthly bills, no contracts, and no surprise charges. This contrasts with traditional carrier postpaid plans where data use is billed after the fact on your monthly statement.
Q2What is the difference between prepaid and postpaid eSIM?
Prepaid eSIM: you buy a fixed amount of data or a set number of days upfront. When the data or validity period runs out, service stops until you buy more. Postpaid eSIM: some local carriers offer postpaid eSIM plans for residents, billing monthly for continued service. Travel eSIM providers are exclusively prepaid because international travelers cannot establish local credit for postpaid accounts.
Q3Can I get a postpaid eSIM plan as a traveler?
Not as a visitor. A local postpaid plan asks for a local address, a local bank account or credit history, and often a national ID. A resident with a long-term permit can apply for one. A prepaid travel eSIM needs none of these, so a visitor buys one before the trip.
Q4Does prepaid eSIM data roll over?
No. Prepaid travel eSIM data expires at the end of the validity period, whether or not you used it all. Each plan page states when its validity starts and how it counts days. Pick the 7, 14 or 30-day plan that matches the trip, not a longer one.
Q5Is prepaid eSIM cheaper than postpaid roaming?
A prepaid eSIM has one price for the trip length, while postpaid roaming bills each day on the next statement. Our top pick sells 7 days of unlimited data in Japan, with 2 GB a day at full speed, for $19.71, one price for the week (prices checked 30 Oct 2026).
Q6What happens when a prepaid eSIM plan expires?
Data service stops. The eSIM profile remains on your phone. You can purchase a new plan through the provider app and it activates on the same eSIM line. You do not need to scan a new QR code or reinstall anything. For Airalo, the top-up applies to the profile already on the phone and reactivates service immediately.
